I'm Laura, and I'm a senior creative
Describe your job
My job is to come up with ideas for companies like Netflix and Amazon Prime to help them promote their new shows and films on social media.
The ideas can range from interactive Instagram stories or digital out-of-home screens, it all depends what show it’s for and it means a lot of time watching TV at work. Shame.
What are the most important skills you need to do your job?
I have to use a lot of initiative and imagination, sometimes I’m given just the title and a short bio of a film to work with so it’s tricky to know where to even begin. It’s a case of looking at the genre, potential audience and what the client has liked before to get the right idea.
I also have to work really fast. Deadlines in the entertainment industry are crazy quick, sometimes I’ll get briefed on a Monday for a pitch due a few days later so I need to be good at juggling my workload and prioritising what needs to be done first.
Another important skill is confidence. I need to be able to present my work with passion and get the client as excited as I am about the ideas.
I left school and...
Went to Uni. Left clueless. Got a job in publishing. Didn’t like it. Got an internship at a company I'd never heard of. Cool offices though.
Worked as an account exec for a global sports brand. DID like it. Moved to an ad agency. Became a Creative.
Stumbled into a job that my younger self would have been proud of 👍

Before I started my career, I wish I knew…
No one will ever care about your job as much as you will.
You can have a good manager and a good support system around you, but ultimately it’s up to you to fight for what you want.
A mistake I made which you can avoid repeating is...
Living in the advertising bubble. I wish I’d been more aware that what is interesting to me and the people around my desk, isn’t necessarily interesting to the average joe.
I’d like to have been a bit more realistic and come up with ideas that my parents or friends outside the industry would have liked and shared. The people whose opinion actually matters to me.
So, what’s next?
Before becoming a mum, I was on track to becoming an ACD so I’ll hopefully pick this back up after mat leave.
My 5 year goal is to be doing more creative work outside of my day to day job. I want my son to see me as an all-round creative person, not just someone who has the job title ‘creative’.
