Hannah Bliss, Marketing

I'm Hannah, and I'm a director of marketing

Describe your job

By nurturing my team of marketeers, I enable the creation and implementation of US-specific marketing strategies and tactics, so that we will successfully drive sales for our audio recording and music creation products.

I make sure that all our actions honor our company’s brand values and guidelines, that we stay within budget, and that our projects and campaigns happen on time. I provide professional (and often emotional) support for my team so that they can achieve greatness in their day to day. I regularly communicate with our Board of Directors, keeping them updated on US affairs in order to maintain support and understanding of the US business.

What are the most important skills you need to do your job?

Marketing is all about passion. A desire to tell a story, to touch someone on a deeper level in order to have them believe in your product, your brand, your company. So, a creative mindset and a good imagination will go far.

However, marketing holds hands with sales, they are best friends and worst enemies! One without the other won’t get very far in business. So an aptitude for digging in to data, and making decisions based on real world numbers is very beneficial.

Being able to look at sales figures or google analytics, or customer data, and deciding to do a marketing campaign off of the back of your findings… then you’re a Marketeer!

I left school and...

I went to University for Interactive Media Design, which was primarily focussed on website and CD-ROM design, technology which is now quite archaic. However, my love for artistic design and crafting the customer experience lead me to film/TV special effects (putting blood and goo on werewolves for example) and then to marketing. I started my career as a UK Marketing Coordinator and across 12 years have worked my way up to US Marketing Manager, and now US Director of Marketing.

I’m most proud of...

Our company exhibits at the largest global Music Industry tradeshow, “NAMM” every year in California.

In 2019 I designed a booth that transformed our music technology products into video games and displayed them all in a 1990s inspired arcade, complete with gumball machine, prizes for trading in your tickets, and a huge Dance-Dance-Revolution inspired dance floor and wall. It was a big social media success!

Before I started my career, I wish I knew…

Don’t underestimate yourself.

Don’t think you don’t have the potential to grow into something great just because you don’t have all the skills right now. Have faith that if you put in the hard work and have the right attitude, it will fall into place. There will always be a company that will value your tenacity and hard work.

A mistake I made which you can avoid repeating is...

Thinking that you have to have everything figured out when you accept your first professional role. Give yourself a chance to grow in and out of a company.

So, what’s next?

Right now I love the company I work for and the team i work with, so i don’t see any big changes in my role in the immediate future. However, I am striving to get very involved with our company’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion initiatives. ED&I is so important for a company’s growth and respect (both internally and externally) and I want to be a part of the team that crafts and perfects that messaging and the resulting actions. I want the company I work for to be a safe, open and supportive place for anyone and everyone to work, and a place where people are proud to be a part of the team.
